"The Gainesville Clock Tower" (2023)
Acrylic on canvas. Completed January 14th, 2023. Image is approximately 85cm x 65cm.
The Gainesville Clock Tower, also known as the Seth Thomas Clock is located at East University Avenue and NE First Street, built in conjunction with the old Alachua County Courthouse, completed in Thomaston, Connecticut on July 1st, 1885 and installed in the courthouse that same year. In 1984, this smaller individual tower (roughly 25ft/7.5m tall) was constructed by Theodore Crom to preserve the clock which once stood atop the old Courthouse. The clock fell into disrepair for several years, but was finally cleaned and restored in 2016.
This is not to be confused with the Century Bell Tower located on the campus of the University of Florida about 1/2 mile (1 km) away.
